While commonly installed in kitchens and living rooms to connect with outdoor areas, bi-fold doors can absolutely be installed onto existing conservatories too.

In fact, it’s something we’d highly recommend, especially if you’re beginning to feel restricted by an existing door. Adding a bi-fold door set to a conservatory gives you healthy natural light, a welcome intake of fresh air, and outdoor views best enjoyed with a book or whilst watching your favourite show.

• Same-Size Swaps: If you are swapping an existing door set for a bottom-rolling bi-fold of the exact same width, the existing opening may already provide sufficient support.
• Widening Openings or Removing Dwarf Walls: If you are extending the opening or removing a brick dwarf wall, the upper framework will require structural reinforcement, such as a dedicated lintel or steel goalpost frame, to carry the roof load above.

Getting the structural foundation right ensures your doors slide smoothly, preventing sagging, jamming, or frame distortion over time. Given that quality, aluminium doors boast an impressive lifespan of 30 to 45+ years, proper initial installation is crucial to enjoying them for decades to come.

• Planning Permission: In the vast majority of cases, replacing existing windows or doors with bi-folds falls under Permitted Development rights. As long as you aren’t extending the original footprint of the conservatory or living in a listed building/conservation area, formal planning permission is rarely required.
• Building Regulations & Energy Efficiency: If your bi-fold doors are installed on an outer wall, or if they separate your main house from the conservatory, they must comply with current UK Building Regulations (Part L). Modern replacement external doors must meet strict U-value targets for thermal performance. High-specification double glazing or triple glazing with low-E coatings and thermal breaks is essential to prevent heat loss, manage glare, and maintain comfortable temperature control year-round.

You’re promised smooth operation on the rollers of the track when you do open it fully, but if you do need to pop outside quicky you can for the traffic door.

Flush thresholds are available too, meaning there isn’t a trip hazard; the lower track simply sits level with your floor.
