Double glazing vs triple glazing: Which is best for your Yorkshire home?

  • June 18, 2026
  • |Windows

Double glazing vs triple glazing is a headscratcher that doesn’t really have a clear answer.

Our advice is that, for most Yorkshire homes, quality double glazing is enough. It’s found in over 90% of homes across the country, and when combined with efficient frames like uPVC, is enough to keep your energy bills low and your home comfortable.

Though there are cases where triple glazing does make more sense. These include if your home is isolated in a rural, windy location like the North Yorkshire Moors, you have the additional money and want best in class, or live in an especially noisy location, next to a railway line for instance.

It is important to note that in some cases, double glazing can actually provide better thermal performance than triple glazing. This depends on the thickness of the glass panes. Although at Yorkshire Conservatories, we manufacture our uPVC windows in house, so ensure triple glazing is a worthy upgrade should you choose it.

We explore both options in more depth below, with handy tables hopefully making clear which option is best for you.

Double glazing vs triple glazing: A comparison

The core difference comes down to layers of glass. Double glazed windows use two panes of glass with a layer of argon gas sealed between them.

Triple glazing adds an extra pane of glass, creating two separate layers of gas and three glass surfaces in total.

That additional pane makes a meaningful difference to heat loss, noise reduction and thermal efficiency, but it also affects cost, weight and installation requirements.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency, put simply, is how well your windows reduce heat transfer. This means retaining warmth in winter when it’s essential, but also preventing hot air from entering during a heatwave, so a thermally efficient window is beneficial year-round.

The better your windows perform, the less energy you use to heat your home, which means lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint.

Verdict

Both options deliver strong thermal performance, but triple glazing edges ahead when done right. If you currently have single glazing installed, either will be a significant upgrade.

Noise reduction

Double glazing reduces external noise considerably compared to single glazing, and for most homes this level of sound reduction is perfectly adequate.

Triple glazing wins more clearly here though, but you’ll likely only notice the difference if you live in a busy area, such as Leeds city centre or next to a railway line/motorway.

Verdict

If you live near busy roads, under a flight path or in a noisier part of Yorkshire, triple glazing will make a noticeable difference to your quality of life. For quieter locations, double glazing is more than sufficient.

Cost

Double glazing is the more affordable option upfront and remains the most popular type of glazing for homeowners across the UK.

Triple glazing carries a higher upfront cost due to the additional pane of glass and more complex manufacturing process. However, long-term energy savings can offset this over time, and we offer flexible finance options to help spread the cost.

Verdict

Double glazing is the better choice if budget is a priority. Triple glazing costs more upfront but can pay for itself over time through lower heating bills. It’s a long-term investment rather than an additional expense to think twice about.

Weight requirements

Double glazed units are lighter, placing less stress on frames and surrounding structures, making them straightforward to install across a wide range of property types, including older buildings.

The extra pane makes triple glazed units noticeably heavier, so window frames need to be strong enough to support the additional weight.

Verdict

For most modern properties, weight isn’t a barrier. Our uPVC and aluminium frames are manufactured to handle triple glazing comfortably.

However, if you have an older or listed building, it’s always worth discussing your specific requirements with our team before making a decision.

Yorkshire climate suitability

Yorkshire weather is famously unpredictable. Double glazing handles it well, keeping cold air out, managing moist air and maintaining a comfortable room temperature throughout the colder months.

Triple glazing is particularly well suited to exposed locations and colder climates, and if your home sits on a hillside or faces the brunt of northern winters, the superior insulation will make a real difference.

Verdict

Both options are well suited to the Yorkshire climate. However, for homes in exposed spots such as the hills around Huddersfield, the Pennine fringes or other colder parts of the region, triple glazing is the more practical long-term choice.

Which is best for my Yorkshire home?

Choose double glazing if:

  • You want excellent thermal performance at a lower upfront cost
  • Your home is in a sheltered location
  • You’re replacing old single glazing and want a clear improvement
  • Budget is a key priority
  • You live in an older or listed building where additional weight may be a concern

Choose triple glazing if:

  • You want the best possible noise reduction, particularly near busy roads
  • You want to maximise energy savings and reduce heating bills long term
  • Your home is in an exposed or colder part of Yorkshire
  • Long-term comfort and a reduced carbon footprint are your priorities

Available glazing styles and materials

We offer both double and triple glazing across our full range of window styles and frame materials.

Casement windows

Hinged and operated using a simple handle, casement windows are the most popular style not just in Yorkshire but the whole of the UK. You’d struggle to find any street without them, and they suit both traditional and contemporary Yorkshire homes.

White uPVC windows

Flush sash windows

Flush sash windows sit level within the frame for a smooth, clean finish. They’re a popular choice for period properties and modern new builds alike.

Sliding sash windows

Opening vertically within the frame, sliding sash windows are the leading choice for a vintage look, they’re right at home in more traditional areas such as Harrogate, York or the Dales.

Dual sliding sash windows

Tilt and turn windows

Offering two opening positions, tilt and turn windows tilt inward from the top for ventilation or open fully from the side, which makes them easy to clean. They’re practical and secure.

Bay and bow windows

Bay and bow windows extend outwards from the lower floor. They are either curved or multi-faceted, and are a really good option for attracting light from all angles, and adding extra living space.

White uPVC bay windows

Aluminium frames

Strong, slim and contemporary, aluminium frames offer narrow sightlines, more glass and a modern finish. Highly durable and low maintenance, they’re ideal for modern homes and extensions.

uPVC frames

uPVC is a strong synthetic material. It’s the most popular window frame in Yorkshire for a number of reasons.

It’s affordable because it can be mass-produced but also offers really good thermal performance and is easy to clean. It’s typically associated with a plain finish, but woodgrain options are available too.

What are the benefits of choosing a company that manufactures in-house?

In-house manufacturing means tighter quality control, faster lead times and no middleman, which helps keep costs down. Every unit is checked throughout production, built to your exact measurements and delivered on a timeline you can rely on.

Because we manufacture our own uPVC frames, we can ensure triple glazing is properly integrated and correctly supported, so you get the full benefit of the upgrade. Here’s what that means in practice:

  • Quality control at every stage: Any issues are caught in production and amended before installation
  • No middleman: We manage costs directly and pass savings on to you
  • Reliable lead times: We control the schedule, so timelines are clear and dependable
  • Made to measure: Every window is built to your exact specifications for a perfect fit
